How I Got Started
I've been a woodworker for about 12 years and have been making end grain cutting boards for about 7 years. The way I became a woodworker was by accident. No, Really an accident. I was in an industrial explosion and fire. A 55 gallon drum that had some paint thinner in it, exploded and sprayed me with paint thinner and caught fire. A piece of the exploding barrel cut my left leg so badly it had to be amputated. Almost 85% of my body was burned, most of it third degree. Then as you can imagine, I went through a few years of therapy and surgeries to get to where I am today.
Now that takes me to were I became a woodworker. As I was recovering I Became Really bored, so I started to dabble in woodworking. I started small, but as thing usally go, the projects kept getting bigger and bigger from crafts to benches then on to kitchen cabinets, chairs, and tables and the list goes on.
Then one day my wife asked me to make her a cutting board, not long grain cutting board, but end grain, like they were made 100 yrs ago. So I started to experiment with different types of wood, arranging them in different patterns, then the idea took off and I've been doing them ever since.
I also have a saw mill and dry kiln to process my lumber. The trees I use come from tree care company's They would use the trees for firewood. So I call my boards "green" boards.
